About Mellie and her cakes
Mellie Makes Makes was created in 2006 when sadly the Cliff House Tea Shop and Restaurant where I worked in Happisburgh closed. I have always made celebration and wedding cakes for family and friends, who have always said 'you should do this as a business', so now seemed to be the ideal opportunity to do it.
I have a background in catering having completed a two year City and Guilds catering course, and one year OND in Catering and Catering Management, and spent eight years in various jobs gaining experience to further my career. I then had a drastic career move to use my creative skills in the Stained and Decorative Glass business. After ten years I went back into catering, finally ending up at the Tea Shop.
So back to cakes: I try and create something different, rather than just copying something from a book, whether it be something plain, or really elaborate. And my cakes taste good too!
I use a variety of techniques and materials depending on the design - royal icing, fondant and sugar paste, creating floral arrangements, modelled figures, just about anything you can imagine.
I'm a member of the Norwich branch of the British Sugarcarft Association, and I've been successfully entering my cakes and decoration at the East Anglian Sugarcraft Exhibition since 2007.
